The Location

MTB Park near Bathurst in NSW.

At a Glance

Flowy single track in the foothills of Wahluu Mt. Panorama.

Sensory Engagement

The area used to be used for grazing, so there aren’t a lot of trees.  Riders get a clear view to the mountains to the east, which provide a speccy views all day, but especially at sunrise, sunset and when the easterly weather lumps clouds on the mountains.

Other Stuff

These trails were started soon after the construction of the velodrome and BMX track at Bathurst. They are fairly new, and mostly hand-built.

Also, Cat Head burrs are found here.  These are the small seeds of a ground-spreading herbaceous plant (Tribulus terrestris Caltrop) which have woody burr with sharp rigid spines to about 6mm long, with the burr about 1cm in diameter (excluding spines).  These spikes on these burrs pierce rubber on tyres, shoes, thongs, … and more.  Google cat head burr and check out the images.

Best time to go

This route can be ridden at any time of year.  As always, I give the trails a day to dry out after rain.

What’s the best bike for this route?

XC bikes work the best, either dually or hard tail.

Do I take anything special with me?

Water and a bit of food.  Also, top up your sealant (this is cat head country).

Route Difficulty

I rate this course as a 3 Tough Gig (based on doing 6 laps of the Chilla in Bathzilla 56km course).  In reality, the Park has 12 beginner and 8 intermediate trails making it an ideal place to learn to ride XC.

Course Notes

This is a course that winds around on the flatter terrain at the bottom of the park before sending riders up to the top of the park for a look at the view, and then the descent (which is super fun).

Good parts: Views.  Descent on Ryanocoaster, and Forks and Spoons.

Tough parts: The climb up from the velodrome.

Crappy parts: Lack of trees.

Would I do it again? Regularly.  Local go-to circuit for MTB riders.

Traps for young players: Catheads.  Plays havoc on your tyres and ruins your ride.  Stay on the trails (and off the “grass”).
